Pioneers of the Ibiza sound: Paul Oakenfold
Pual Oakenfold has been actively involved in music from a very young age and isn’t surprising that he would end up spending the majority of his life on it.
What is truly remarkable is the influence he ended up having in big parts of the world – both directly and indirectly. This is why we call him ‘the original superstar DJ’
Paul was in 1984 living in New York, working for Champion Records. Later he ended up as a British agent and a promoter, which was the way he heard about Ibiza.
Not surprisingly, he made it to the island.
In 1987 he was celebrating his birthday at the island with a group of friends (including Danny Rampling) This visit to the island was going to be written about in the history books of music.
The famous story goes as they tried their first ecstasy pill and afterwards exposed themselves to the tunes from DJ Alfredo at Amnesia. They never had such an inspiring experience and so they were going to develop that experience back in UK. And they did.
Paul started his own record label, Perfecto, one year after their visit to the white isle. This label supposed a great impulse for trance music in the UK and the rest of Europe.
He kept playing at different clubs, implementing the sound of Ibiza in an attempt to spread the unique Ibiza feeling. It got a success and an inspiration from people all over the globe.
In 2000-01, Paul was seen as a music pioneer in America, starting up Cyperfest, which by that time had the biggest dance capacity in the US. Later, in 2008, he spread his tunes to Las Vegas, during his weekly gig at ‘The Palms’
