Meet the artist: Melé
As he lands on the island ready to play the Love Amplified event at Benimussa Park tonight, we were able to grab five minutes with one of the UK’s most sought-after producers right now: Melé. Counting releases on prestigious labels like Defected and Eats Everything’s ‘Edible’, not to mention a coveted Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, it’s safe to say things are taking off in a big way or him.
When did you first fall in love with electronic music? Was there a specific track or was it a moment when you went to a party?
I think it was probably around 13, I was really into hip hop and didn’t really like dance music at all at first, but my uncle played me The Prodigy’s second album and I just became obsessed by it. I went to see them in concert a few years after and saw the Audio Bullys support them which was the first time I really started getting into house music.
Who was the first DJ you ever went to see and where was it?
It was at a festival with my friends and it was Jazzie B from Soul 2 Soul. He was playing all types of different genres and just making it work which was amazing. Still one of my biggest influences.
How did you decide on ‘Melé’ as your DJ name?
I was really into video games when I was a kid and when I was trying to pick a DJ name I just came across the game Super Smash Brothers Melee and thought that will do. No Idea why I added the accent onto the E though.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
There have been so many over the years. Honestly, I think just being able to go out and play all over the world all year round is just a constant highlight.
And what would be your ultimate ‘pinch me’ moment for the future?
I think probably having my own Ibiza residency or something like that. Or at least seeing myself on one of the billboards.
How would you describe Ibiza to someone who has never been?
I always say there’s just this feeling you get every time you land in Ibiza which is very unique to anywhere on earth. I took a few friends for the first time last summer and they got it too. I love how you can go from crazy parties to quiet beaches within the space of 5 minutes. The best place on earth.
What three things would the perfect night out include?
Best mates, good weather and Hierbas
Where can we find you over the rest of the summer?
I’m playing a few more Ibiza shows before the end of the summer. Eastern Electrics and Creamfields back in the UK. Then I’m off to Australia and NZ. Exciting!
