Ibiza Global Radio presents up-and-coming artist LAÛ at Creamfields Argentina
As the White Island’s longest-standing and biggest electronic music platform, Ibiza Global Radio has welcomed some of the world’s biggest DJs and producers in the studio over the past two decades.
But the team also understands the importance of nurturing new talent, and this year, as the Ibiza Global crew prepares to bring the sound of the island to Creamfields Argentina, they are proud to shine the spotlight on an exciting new artist.
Set to play the Ibiza Global stage on November 16th, the second day of the huge festival, Dutch selector LAÛ is gearing up for his biggest show to date as part of the electronic music brand’s carefully curated roster of artists, which also includes Sasha, Eelke Kleijn, Henry Saiz, Igor Marijuan, and Oostil amongst others.
We sat down with LAÛ to find out more about the up-and-coming DJ and producer.
Tell us a little bit about your connection to Ibiza and how you got into electronic music…
I’m originally from the Netherlands, but I’ve been coming to Ibiza since I was one year old because my parents have been visiting the island since 1985. My dad’s a big music guy, he used to love the Beatles and rock music, which you could find more of in Ibiza back in the day. And he fell in love with electronic music here, too. I remember we used to drive around the island in the car playing Erick Morillo and Shapeshifters, that is a special memory for me.
When did you start to play music yourself?
Growing up in Ibiza, I started getting into the clubs as a teenager. Some of my first parties were Flower Power and Armin Van Buuren. But my first time going to an actual rave was in Sydney at SASH, which is THE underground party in Australia.
While I was at university I started to play music all the time and I was trying to get gigs everywhere. The more I played, the more I started to get better gigs and that’s when I decided to get serious about it.
Are you also producing your own music?
This summer, I started to work with Javier Ferrer from Metrica Studios - and that has been a total gamechanger. He is such a great teacher, and he’s been showing me how to use Ableton like an instrument. It’s been a crazy experience working with him and making my own music, it’s really changed my life. We have three tracks that are super close to being finished and can be put out as an EP, and they are going to be super special. And then we have lots more material that we can work on in the future, where we haven’t even scratched the surface yet.
How would you describe your sound?
It’s house, first and foremost, with a little bit of tech, minimal and indie elements. A little bit of afro, too, because I love percussion. And I love using ‘live source’ elements that have been recorded outside of the studio, for example the sounds I hear on the streets of Ibiza Town. I also use a lot of clips from old interviews with different artists. For example, Keith Richards and Jimmy Hendrix because they are such iconic artists and their voices give a cool, sexy feel to the music. And then I combine everything with modern elements.
We are at the end of another busy summer on Ibiza, what were your highlights?
I’ve been working with some really great people this year, including Ibiza Global Radio and NYX Agency. It’s been really exciting to work on my brand with their support.
Another highlight was my gig in Akasha last weekend because I got to play before one of my absolute idols, Mihai Popoviciu. He’s an amazing producer and I had never seen him play in person before, so that in itself was already exciting. And I’m super honoured I got to be on the same line-up as him, because I think his music is just amazing.
You also went to ADE, how was that?
I went to a lot of conferences and talks, and I did a lot of networking. I got to meet David Lewis from David Lewis Productions, and Pete Downes from Jukebox PR. And then I had a couple of gigs, too, which was cool, and I went to a few parties as well. I went to PIV, which was fun, and I saw Dennis Ferrer at Marbels Vintage. ADE is always a crazy experience!
And you’ve still got a huge gig to look forward to: Creamfields Argentina!
I’m super excited because I have never been to South America before, so that’s going to be crazy. It’s definitely the biggest event I have played so far, and I’m thrilled to be playing my finished music for people. That’s going to be a huge moment for me, I’m super stoked.
What are your plans for the rest of 2024?
After Argentina I’m going to take a little bit of time off, because I’ve been at it non-stop since June. And then I want to go on a music retreat somewhere, to spend a full week or so just focusing on music for eight, 12 hours every day. I think that would be super productive.
